The nitrogen in urea is in amide form; it is not immediately absorbed by roots but undergoes a gradual enzymatic transformation in the soil (a hydrolysis process facilitated by the enzyme urease). Under the influence of moisture and soil microorganisms, it first converts into ammonium nitrogen and subsequently—through nitrification—into nitrate nitrogen. This staged breakdown ensures sustained, controlled plant nutrition over several weeks, drastically reducing losses caused by rapid leaching into deeper soil layers during rainfall or irrigation.
